“There aint nothin’ like Hip Hop music”
It’s true, and Big Ted is the living proof. On his 13th birthday he was given a gift that opened up his world and sparked what is without question one of the most enduring careers in Hip Hop music.
Since that day he first plugged in his boom box, ghetto blaster, stereo or whatever you want to call it… Ted’s world was changed forever!
Raised on an audio diet of 80’s pirate radio greats like LWR, JFM, Solar, Horizon and Kiss he soaked up the sounds blasting from the speakers in the shape of Grandmaster Flash and Sugar Hill Gang. Afrika Bambaata and RunDMC. Dougie Fresh and LLCoolJ. Whatever it was, whoever it was Big Ted was listening and learning. Learning so much that he began penning his own lyrics to his favourite beats and teaching himself to mix and scratch on his fathers record player!
Those early years of listening and learning have lead Big Ted to an enviable career as one of Hip Hop’s most popular names and faces.
A friend introduced Big Ted to the then pirate radio dj 279 in the early 90’s. The subsequent relationship led to Ted co-presenting The Friday Nite Flava on Choice FM throughout the famed ‘Golden Era’ of hip hop, regularly meeting and interviewing legendary artists including KOOL HERC, GRAND WIZARD THEODORE, BIG L, LORDS OF THE UNDERGROUND, DAS EFX, REDMAN, SNOOP DOGGY DOGG and more…
A move up the dial to host the now legendary weekly KISS FM radio show for 10 years, saw him boast a list of guests that reads like the who’s who of A-list hip hop celebrities. Think JA RULE or LUDACRIS. DE LA SOUL or RunDMC. JAZZY JEFF or QUEEN LATIFAH, in addition to LLCOOLJ, NAS, ICE CUBE, KRS1, WU TANG CLAN, DAME DASH, PETE ROCK, JERU, KANYE WEST, ESTELLE, DIZZEE RASCAL, KANO, BLAK TWANG and many many more. They have all blessed his show with their greatness and been witness to the charm of the funniest rap dude on the airwaves.
Who else could have an on air rap impressions battle with controversial star THE GAME?
Who else could get BUSTA RHYMES to reveal what he and Nicole Ritchie once got up to?
Who else has had traded jokes about driving with MTV’s Pimp My Ride host XZIBIT before he was pimping!
Yup, Big Ted did it all and more.
Now with his weekly ‘Teddy’s Jam’ show on new station Mi Soul, Ted continues his mission to make everybody a fan of hip hop!
As a mainstay on the club scene in the UK for many years, cities up and down this island have witnessed his party rocking dj style and he’s taken his skills to locations across the world. North, South, East and West Africa. Dubai, Germany, France and Switzerland, Austria & the USA are just some the locales that have played host to Ted in the mix.
He’s shared decks with dj greats CASH MONEY, DJ PREMIER and JAZZY JEFF, and stages with EMINEM, NAS, JA RULE, GANGSTARR, DE LA SOUL, MASTA ACE, DESTINYS CHILD, MOS DEF, ROOTS MANUVA,DIZZEE RASCAL and TY.
But don’t think he’s only comfortable on the turntables or behind the microphone. Ted is also a host with the most.As the face and voice of TROUBLE TV for its launch and early years, he regularly sat down with the stars for interviews. Ask BEYONCE and KELLY ROWLAND about Teds ability to flip accents or TYRESE about his fashion advice. 5 years of classic television. Ted was a front man for the Princes Trust Urban Music Festival, introducing some of the worlds biggest stars to a packed audience at Earls Court.
Nowadays you’ll find him popping up frequently as a dj in demand wherever the party is hot, voicing the commercial for your favourite album or on tv somewhere doing his thing in front of the camera like no one else can.
More recently, Ted has been busy touring Europe and beyond with respected artists Ty and Blak Twang, manning the decks as they rip stages with their classics.
As a host he’s been the man out front keeping audiences entertained for concerts by hip hop giants EPMD, Pete Rock &CL Smooth, KRSONE, Raekwon, Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane.
The 2012 European premiere of critically acclaimed hip hop documentary “Something From Nothing – The Art Of Rap” also saw Ted bringing his personality to the stage and introducing the film and icons Melle Mel, Chuck D and Ice T to a star studded audience. But then..who else could!!!!
Hip Hop hasn’t been the same since Big Ted grabbed a hold of it!
