Music is at the heart of what Ross Allen does… His life is based around it but unlike most he has/is still exploring so many different facets/roles within it. He is currently hosting radio shows, running a record label, A&R-ing for Island Records (he is now at legendary electrionic label R&S), managing producers and artists, DJing at his residency in London and playing all over the planet. People around the world know Ross for one or many of his different roles.
You might know Ross’s brilliant Sunday night (9-11pm) radio show on Mi-soul.com with Sade’s Andrew Hale (or his recently finished Ministry of Sound show, The Meltdown). It’s a two-hour guide to the latest and greatest in music from the hottest mp3s to obscure album tracks. Ross won a Sony award for his long standing BBC London radio show – Destination In which ran for nine years until it was turned into a talk radio station. This acclaimed show lead to him doing many shows on BBC Radio One and 6Music. Which on an irregular basis he is still doing.
It’s an oft-repeated cliché that Ross is a DJ’s DJ, but that is only half the story. He plays great music and has made a career out of knowing what is good and what people will like. He has DJed all over the world from Venezuela to Dundee and has been a resident at London’s best clubs over the years, from Fabric (Fabric Live, in its early years), Bar Rhumba (the seminal That’s How It Is), Cargo (Destination Out which ran for nine years), Ministry (Switch on Fridays), The Social Meltdown and now his weekly Meltdown at The Birdcage on Columbia Rd.
All the while working for (R&S/Island/Domino Records/Ninja) and running numerous labels (Filter /Casual /Island Blue) he’s never lost the love for fresh and interesting music whilst working on projects as varied as the amazing Country Got Soul series to Peshay via Spacek and Yo Majesty via Pay-As-U-Cartel and Lady Sovereign, Coldcut, Talvin Singh (which won the Mercury Music Prize) and The Sugababes (where he scored his first number 1 with Freak Like Me).
Ross has just started as head of A&R for R&S Records, the legendary electronic label from Belgium. He was previously at Island Records where he was A&R for 16 years, lastly working with the legendary DJ Shadow. He added a level of coolness to all their signings by sorting out many remixes for the label (including the twice Grammy nominated Moto Blanco remixes of Mary J Blige). He has recently set up a new label/publishing company Meltdown Recordings, which will develop new and emerging talent, something which is at the core of what he does.
He has moved into management over the past few years and is currently working with Big Life Management looking after several acts: South London MC (featured MC on MIA’s Paper Planes) Afrikan Boy and hot new Ministry Of Sound signing London Grammar. He also manages highly acclaimed Decca signed country/soul singer Jeb Loy Nichols currently causing a stir with his latest album ‘The Jeb Loy Nichols Special’ whilst looking after highly regarded, UK producers Silkie, Distance, Oliver Wright, Darq E Freaker and Fracture.
