Sugarhill Gang’s Big Bank Hank Dies Aged 57
The co-founder of Sugarhill Gang has died aged 57.
Henry Jackson, better known as Big Bank Hank, passed away at hospital on Tuesday night from complications relating to cancer.
Sugarhill Gang are the trio responsible for the iconic “Rappers Delight” released back in 1979. Despite not being the first record to feature rapping, it’s considered to be the song that popularized hip hop around the world and saw the introduction of the genre on US radio stations. Considered to be the best selling 12” record of all time, Rappers Delight introduced hip-hop to mainstream audiences and acted as a propellant towards the notoriety the cultural phenomenon carries today. Less than a month ago, the track celebrated its 35th anniversary.
A message from fellow band members Wonder Mike and Master Gee stated “So sad to hear of our brother’s passing. Rest in peace Big Bank.”
