It’s wonderful to unite lovers of all things soulful via a handful of questions that seem easy upon first look. But dig deeper and they tend to arouse real hesitation in most.  Life and Soul hits to South East London this week and chats to disco queen, Claire Graham.

What Are Your Biggest Passions?

My biggest passions are my son and then of course music (D.I.S.C.O!) but in particular the ‘dancefloor ‘ experience – I truly believe that humans dancing together is a very important, spiritual thing, essential to our nature.

What’s Your Favourite Thing To Do When You’re Not Working?

When I’m not working I love dancing, hanging out in parks and the Kent coast, pokehunting and gossiping.

When And How Did Your Love For Soulful Music Begin?

My love of soulful music started with my Dad and his record collection.  He was in the Fleet Air Arm during the 1960s and was posted overseas so he could buy records from the American forces shops. We’d sit for hours listening to old R&B and Soul 45s or he had masses of mixtapes that he was VERY possessive over.  I love finding later disco tracks by the same artists we listened to….

Name Your Favourite Top Three Tracks Of All Time…

Top three tunes ever – impossible.  So here are just three of my hundreds of top tracks.

Stay Free – Ashford and Simpson

Lets Do It – Convertion

What Musical Artist Inspires You And Why?

Which Mi-Soul Show Do You Enjoy The Most And Why?

I love Tosca’s show – because you never quite know what you’re going to get!  And Abi & Bob because of their hilarious chemistry!

What Was The Last Gig You Went To?

I saw Bettye Lavette at Ronnie Scott’s – with my Dad.

What Artist Would You Like To See Live And Why?

I would really, really like to see Gladys Knight because she fits into the ‘R&B through soul and into disco’ thing that I love so much.

What Tune Can You Not Get Enough Of Right Now?

The tune I can’t leave alone at the moment is Joey Negro’s remix of Love Ballad by George Benson.
