What Piece Of Advice Would You Give Your Young Self Now?

Get bar experience and travel the world.

When And How Did Your Love For Soulful Music Begin?

When I was about 14 (1984) I grew up on Canvey Island, the home of the Goldmine. We sneaked in during the holidays and the rest is history, as they say. I have dipped out from time to time, but its always been the basis of my music taste.

Name Your Favourite Top Three Tracks Of All Time…

Aww man… These questions are so hard to answer as it can change from mood to mood! At the moment I would say;

Tammi Terrel, All I do,  Sly and the Family Stone ‘If You Want Me To Stay’ and Bobby Womack, Please Forgive My Heart.

What Musical Artist Inspires You And Why?

I’ve always loved Ray Charles and admired what he achieved despite his limitations, but then a lot of the really early black artists achieved so much despite the obstacles/racism they had to deal with.

Which Mi-Soul Show Do You Enjoy The Most And Why?

Dr Bob Jones, total respect for Dr Bob! His knowledge and experience and always introducing me to something I’ve not heard before, whether its old or new.

What Was The Last Gig You Went To?

We had a local festival at the start of the month and I volunteered but managed to catch some of the bands in the evening. Before that, it was Madness at Clapham Common, which was fun, Norman Jay, Craig Charles, Toots and the Maytals and Hot 8 Brass were also there.

What Artist Would You Like To See Live And Why?

Stevie Wonder, I didn’t manage to get to his recent gig. He’s such legend. He is a real genius. When you look at the work he was putting out as a child, it amazes me. I would’ve love to have seen Otis Reading too, any of the old school Stax gang.

What Tune Can You Not Get Enough Of Right Now?

Grant Lazlo And his mix of Marvin Gayes Heard it through the Grapevine. I think it’s a couple of years old, but only heard it in the summer. I was hooked.
