Life and Soul: S.E.L

We first heard the tuneful sounds of S.E.L as a backing singer for Soul II Soul and this year we were lucky enough to have her sing live with them and as a solo artist at The Margate Soul Festival. She performed a collection of fantastic tunes and her summer smash ‘Elevation’. This week Life & Soul is all about Soulful Emma Louise…Tell Us A Little About Yourself…I am a UK Soul singer/songwriter and general lover of Music.Where Are You Based In The World?London! My hometownWhat Do You Do For A Living?I am an artist first and foremost, with three solo releases under my belt. I am also a songwriter for other artists and record labels, Vocal Arranger and Backing Vocalist. Im proud to say that I have also been a member of the Soul2Soul collective for about ten years now! I am a Music Degree graduate and Music Teaching Post Graduate, as well as classically trained in Piano and Violin, so I also enjoy doing University lecturing and one to one vocal tuition when I can. I think it’s important for me to share my life experiences of the music industry with young people who also share the same passion. What Are Your Biggest Passions?Music and family. They are the most important things in my life. I work lots so I always try my best to spend quality time with my loved ones when I have a day off. When And How Did Your Love Of Soul Music Begin?Hmmmmmm….that’s a tough one! I think it was hearing Anita Baker’s ‘Sweet Love’ for the first time. I have been hooked every sinceName Your Favourite Top Three Tracks!Okay, I know you didn’t ask, but I’m going to have to give you four! Lol, my favourite song of all time is Maxi Priest’s ‘Wild World’. I know it’s Reggae, so here goes my fave top 3 Soul tracks:Anita Baker: RaptureJamiroquai: Too Young To DiePrince: Raspberry BeretWhat Musical Artist Inspires You The Most And Why?There are soooo many! I’ll try by best to narrow it down…Janet Jackson: Always top of my list, There is no other performer like her, she is the Queen and will always reign in my eyes. Her vocal ability, her capturing performances, choreography, writing… She consistently moves with the times, which is very important for an artist, in my opinion.Prince: The rebel. The educator. The instrumentalist. The songwriter. The lyricist. The producer. The performer. The character. I have been in love with him since I heard his voice for the first time. He was an advocate for creative artists getting to know the music business and maintaining control of all aspects of their creative process. I have always looked up to him and was so devastated when we lost this beautiful soul. When Did You Start Listening To Mi-Soul?Last year. I had been hearing such great things about the station through my UK soul family. As soon as I bought a DAB radio, I was hooked!Which Mi Soul Show Do You Enjoy The Most And Why?Deadly Smedley. He fuses together Old and New Skool so well. His shows are engaging and I find myself singing along to every single tune he plays!Thank you S.E.L.
