One of the true pioneers of UK radio and soul music, Greg Edwards has had an illustrious career helping to bring a new sound and approach to broadcasting. Famous for being instrumental in bringing soul music to the UK on a large scale, Greg also fostered many acts who would go on to make musical history.
Before his time in radio, Greg was an executive at CBS Records where he was responsible for marketing and promotion of soul music on their custom labels. In this role he worked with artists including Johnny Nash, Labelle, The Headhunters (Herbie Hancock), Miles Davis, Robert Knight, The O’Jays, Three Degrees, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and Billy Paul. He also established the Philadelphia International Records presence here in the UK.
While still working at CBS, Greg was approached by BBC Radio One to stand in for DJ Emperor Rosko who was forced to return to Los Angeles on personal leave. After three weeks, Greg was permanently installed for the Saturday 12pm-3pm slot and was soon on his way to becoming a legend of radio.
When Capital Radio gained their license to broadcast they invited Greg to join the fold, but due to contract issues with the BBC he was unable to join them until six months after they went on air. When he did join Greg decided to implement a show he had been thinking of producing for years where all, or most, strands of black origin music would be presented in an entertaining and positive way. From this notion ‘Soul Spectrum’ was born and would continue until Greg left Capital fourteen years later.
Greg has worked at several stations since leaving Capital but it was there he had the biggest impact on the radio industry, forever changing perceptions about music of black origin. His pursuits opened the door for other acts and stations to capitalise on a growing popularity of soul flavoured music.
Now on Mi-Soul, Greg brings his wealth of musical knowledge and broadcast experience to strengthen the station’s already strong broadcasting capabilities. Expect a high energy show with music from across the spectrum of soul.
