International Women’s Day 2022
Join us on Tuesday the 8th of March where we’ll be celebrating International Women’s Day from 7am – 7pm.
We’ll be spotlighting women across the music, arts and media industries – whether that’s legendary names in soul, local musicians or the unsung heroes pushing for more visibility of women in the music industry. You’ll be hearing from:
Shirley Jones – The legendary Shirley Jones lead singer of 70s R&B and soul trio The Jones Girls, who had numerous hits on Philadelphia International Records including ‘You’re Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else’ and ‘Nights Over Egypt.’
Shaila Prospere – Singer-songwriter Shaila Prospere, who has been writing and creating music for over 20 years, and has performed alongside names like Gwen Guthrie and Melba Moore.
Jasmine Dotiwala – Multi-media professional Jasmine Dotiwala who works at brands like Netflix UK, Media Trust, Channel 4 News, MTV and more. In 2020 she moved into a role working with the Netflix UK Editorial & Publishing team
Cyndi Handson – Cyndi Handson, one half of Cyndi Handson a husband and wife duo who have been DJing and promoting parties together for the past two decades.
Sophie Callis – DJ, broadcaster, founder of Panro and The Boat Pod (https://www.theboatpod.com/)
S.E.L. – Mi-Soul favourite Soulful Emma-Louise is a singer, songwriter and musician who’s worked with huge names like DJ Spen and Michele Chiavarini, and released her debut album ‘Loc’d In Consciousness’ last year.
Laila McKenzie – Co-Author and Founder of Lady of the House, Laila Mckenzie is also an events manager & promoter, has been active in the music industry for over two decades. She founded Lady of the House in 2020, and co-wrote the book which champions women in dance music, and includes stories from Barbara Tucker, Jocelyn Brown & more. The organisation/ collective is now putting on a series of events in Bristol, including workshops, panels and masterclasses:
DJ Emma – DJ Emma is a broadcaster, DJ and music producer, who specialises in soul, funk, disco and house. She’s also a regular on the UK summer festival circuit with sets at Glastonbury, Creamfields, Camp Bestival, Shindig and Wilderness under her belt.
Terri Walker – UK soul and RnB singer-songwriter Terri Walker, who signed to Def Soul UK in the early noughties, and has since released numerousn critically acclaimed albums and worked with Mos Def, Salaam Remi and Jennifer Hudson.
Lindsay Webster – US singer-songwriter Lindsay Webster who has garnered two Billboard #1’s and seven Top 10’s on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart, making her the first vocalist in the format to garner a #1 since Sade!
