Chris Philips
Chris Philips is a Mi-Soul original from day one, presenting his Instant Vintage show every Sunday afternoon. He possesses a deep knowledge of the music across soul, jazz, hip hop and dance music.
These days he’s deep on a Tuesday night presenting The Hump on rotation, a two-hour funk intensive. He also jumps in on numerous slots across the station, holding it down when needed, always passionate, always informative and never short of an anecdote or two from a long career.
In the mid-1980s he ran London pirate station K-Jazz, notably the UK’s first ever dedicated jazz radio station, with Jez Nelson and Gilles Peterson. K-Jazz was broadcast from his South London garage on Sundays. Chris also co-founded soul station Starpoint Radio in 1985.
In 1990, Chris joined the brand new Jazz FM 102.2, hosting weekday afternoons, before co-presenting the acclaimed late-night show Somethin’ Else with Jez Nelson. After departing Jazz FM they took the show to Kiss 100FM at the invitation of founder Gordon Mac, simultaneously co-founding the independent production company of the same name. After fifteen years on air at Kiss 100 and stints on Choice FM and The Jazz, both now defunct he joined newly re-launched Jazz FM.
Chris Philips is also a founder member and two-time board member of AFC Wimbledon, the English Football League club that embodies the legacy of Wimbledon FC which controversially relocated to Milton Keynes. Chris was stadium host at the Premier League club and latterly is host AFC Wimbledon’s Plough Lane home.
