In 2013 2 Dam Funky and E-Mix teamed up for the first time since they worked together in 1986 as an integral part of the team behind Sunday Nights at the Africa Centre, the club night where they first met and the event that is legendary for launching Soul ll Soul and their music to global heights. Stephen Rumney was co-promoter of the Sunday Night success story and E-Mix was the legendary vibemaster MC who brought a magical dimension to the sessions while both Steve (Wicked Pulse) and Soul ll Soul played the decks. This historical re-union marks the beginning of an exciting MC and DJ partnership that draws upon the magical vibes of the original Africa Centre sessions funk-injected with a new 21st Century twist. While keeping the original ethos of the Africa Centre music selection the years that have passed has allowed them to dig even deeper and add to the original playlist with a mixture of newly discovered funk gems, modern soul and neo-soul cuts, contemporary jazzy vibes and what Stephen Rumney calls ‘unshazamable’ groove. After many decades of digging the crates the new rare groove has evolved to include exclusive dub plates and bass-pumped re-edits that you simply won’t hear anywhere else on the planet unless you tune in to their monthly Wednesday session on Mi-Soul.
Steve says ‘We’re bringing back the spirit of ‘rare-groove’ and the excitement of going out to hear DJs that played music that no one else was playing. In those days going out was a pilgrimage… if you did not go out you simply did not hear or discover the music. There was no file sharing, no Youtube, no CD burning, no downloads and no internet or mobiles to swap music. The rare groove we used to play back then is no longer rare and the stuff that has been discovered with the internet giving us access to the dusty warehouses, shelves and archives of forgotten music we simply did not know existed back then. Added to this we now have unprecedented access to producers and songwriters music via the internet and the buzz for us is bringing listeners quality music that is currently below the radar or not getting the exposure it deserves. What makes this even more exciting for me is working again with the legend that is E-Mix. I call him The Vibemaster and it’s nothing short of an honour to play alongside him’.
E-Mix has been at the cutting edge of five generations of club evolution, from his early days with the UK’s first rap group Family Quest, through the Soul ll Soul at the Africa Centre era and via pioneering early House clubs like Confusion and Rip (Clink Street), E-Mix has always been a forerunner.
Having been clubbers, club promoters, DJs, producers, music lovers, trend instigators and pioneers on the club scene for over 25 years it occurred to both Steve and E-Mix that there are very few outlets where you can hear two hours of back-to back music that is in the spirit of those legendary Africa Centre nights where they both first met. With E-Mix live on the mike the show re-channels that magical energy and allows a new generation to tap in and find out what all the fuss was about and why the Africa Centre is still talked about today as the epicentre of a golden era of music and clubbing.
With their past deeply rooted in club history, ‘Diggin Deep’ is an opportunity to share their rich legacy, the vibes that changed the musical taste of a generation and give funk and soul lovers an opportunity to connect and plug in to what they call the ‘magical energy grid’. It’s all about the vibes. Even an old tune you have heard many times can feel new and fresh when heard in a new mix or when it’s juxtaposed against a track you have never heard before. This is what excites both of them, having the opportunity to bring attention to music from the past while mixing it into the melting pot of recent releases. And it all happens here exclusively on Mi-Soul!
Digging Deep goes out on the last Wednesday of every month… tune in to the vibes!
