The countdown is over – we are on our away to Margate Soul Festival. Another weekend in the Mi-Soul calendar packed full of soulful goodness. Check out the headlining acts.
They are set to headline Margate Soul Festival this Saturday and it won’t be one to miss.
#Didyouknow…Arrested Development was the 2nd ever hip-hop group to tour with a live band and to have female and male members.
Gwen Dickie began her music career in the 70s being the lead singer for the R&B group Rose Royce. Rose Royce had a massive #1 hit with the rousing and syncopated “Car Wash” in 1976. The group scored additional substantial R&B chart hits with such songs as “I Wanna Get Next to You” throughout the late 70s. Gwen left Rose Royce in the 80s to pursue a solo career.
Today, Gwen is still in demand and will be live at the Margate Soul Festival this Saturday.
#Didyouknow… Gwen Dickie never wanted to be a singer or be in the music business- she wanted to be a flight attendant so she could travel the world for free.
A pioneer in the urban scene, Trevor started his broadcasting career at then pirate station Kiss FM going onto A&R artists such as D’Angelo, signing Lynden David Hall at cooltempo/EMI records. Over the years Trevor has held residences at some of the worlds most famous venues including an 10+ year long successful summer residency at Pacha, Ibiza.
Trevor Nelson will be live at Margate Soul Festival this Saturday.
#Didyouknow…As a teen he had two holidays, both to St Lucia. He hated the first time due to the creepy crawlies, mosquitoes.
They call him the man with the magnificent voice and they are right. Marc Evans is the Soul sensation who first showed up on the UK radar after his 2006 release of ‘The Way You Love Me’. Evans lyrical presentation in song and spoken word is miles beyond one-dimensional artists. To witness any of his performances is truly an experience one won’t soon forget.
Evans will be live this Saturday and the Margate Soul Festival.
#Didyouknow… Both Evans’s parents are musicians and as a child he would attend band rehearsal with them but his love for music didn’t start until collage.
The Blackbyrds were the grand plan of legendary jazz trumpeter. With eight albums released for Fantasy from 1974 to 1980, The Blackbyrds became an inspiration to late 1970s and early 1980s British jazz-funk acts such as Light of the World and Hi-Tension.
The Blackbyrds will be live on Sunday at the Margate Soul Festival.
#Didyouknow…Donald Byrd launched the Blackbyrds in 1973, consisting of students he was lecturing at Howard University.
Joe Bataan began his career in the 60s with his soulful voice and creative arrangements on songs like Subway Joe (1968) he appealed to a diverse audience. In the era of the bugalú and Latin soul, he became a leading innovator in the blending of African American and Latin Caribbean styles.
Bataan will be at Margate Soul Festival this Sunday.
#Didyouknow… With his natural gift for music he taught himself the piano.
MF Robots combines the talents of Brand New Heavies founder, drummer and main songwriter, Jan Kincaid – responsible for 16 top 40 hits 2million album sales – with vocalist and fellow ‘Heavy’, Dawn Joseph, who has sung backing vocals for everyone from Rod Stewart to Phil Collins, Michael Buble to Craig David.
#Didyouknow…The idea of MF Robots was to revamp and renew the classic production values and song writing standards of the 90s acid jazz scene, while touching on funk, jazz, soul and pop.
Beloved UK Soulsmith, Phat Boy and Funkateer Greg Blackman is best known for his uniquely versatile voice and his memorable hooks. He has been drafted in by the likes of DJ Vadim, Daz I Kue, Moquee, Herbgrinder, Featurecast, Renegades Of Jazz and Nightmares On Wax for his always in demand vocal swagger and has appeared on releases from BBE, Tokyo Dawn, Jalapeno and Bombstrikes. He will be live at Margate Soul Festival this Sunday.
#Didyouknow…Blackman enjoys music but also has a love for comic books and is into the Supergod series.
With passionate vocals and a rich velvet tone UK Singer-Songwriter Chidi takes you on a musical journey beginning at the first note. Borrowing from the rich traditions of classic Soul music and blending a fusion of Rock Pop and Jazz Chidi delivers her own brand of UK Soul. She has shared the stage with some big names; James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Pixie Lott to name a few
#Didyouknow…The first record Chidi purchased was The Soul Album by Otis Redding.
From an early age, music has been S.E.L’s primary interest. She started playing the violin and piano at age six and is now classically trained in both instruments. An interest in vocals came later in life and has never left. She took part in her first professional vocal performance piece at aged eleven and her career path was set.
#Didyouknow…S.E.L performed her first professional show at 11yrs old.
As a child, Hil St. Soul adopted her father’s love of music and her 1999 debut album “Soul Organic” received widespread acclaim and featured a cover of Aretha Franklin’s “Until you Come Back to me” which has been played all over the world for over 17 years.
Hil St. Soul will be at this years Margate Soul Festival performing on Sunday.
#Didyouknow…Hil St. Soul studied biochemistry at the University of London, but his strong love for music pushed her to leave and follow her heart.
Influenced by the Funk soul revival of the mid-‘80s, Tom Gile has been producing for many years. With credits ranging from Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and George Duke to Earth, Wind & Fire and the Rolling Stones, to name but a few
