Charlie Butler@CharlieBCopy. Charlie Butler takes a deeper look at the Mi-Soul Playlist.  ‘Love Star’ – Common featuring Marsha Ambrosius and PJCommon hasn’t released an album since 2014 Nobody’s Smile. So it was good to hear he has another on the way (Black America Again) because he’s still an artist from the very top drawer. He’s the rapper’s rapper, a combination of intelligent consciousness, technical skill and street grit. And on ‘Love Star’ he’s again showcasing why he commands such respect in the game. This isn’t hyped up hip hop rappd at a frenetic pace. It’s slow and measured, and Common has to demonstrate his lyrical skill – which he does with aplomb. Marsha Ambrosius, the Liverpudlian singer who seems to have carved out a career as the go-to vocalist for this very genre, provides the soothing chorus. Click on the link and listen. As I mentioned then, there really is true feeling in his voice when he sings – it’s what soul was made from. And I also wrote that he makes what is ordinary, extra-ordinary. ‘Gave Me Love’ is from his new album Evergreen and it’s everything we’re about at Mi Soul: well-made music, top-quality vocals and chilled-out vibes. There’s also a plaintive edge to it too which adds a layer of emotional depth. If you’ve had a hard week and are in need of a stress release then turn this up, lie back and relax.‘Better’ – Snowboy and The Latin Section featuring Jen KearneyWhen I hear music like this it makes me sad that the evenings are drawing in and the mercury is lowering in the thermostat. This is outside music, made for Havanan streets. Snowboy and his band The Latin Section are the torchbearers for UK Latin Jazz and their track ‘Better’ appears in our playlist because it’s infectious and fun. Even as I’m sitting here I’m moving to the horns and the drums and the bass and the piano. Everyone needs a perk me up from time to time – ‘Better’ will certainly give you that.
