The Brand New Heavies @ Jazz Café Camden London on 15/07/17
The Brand New Heavies are one of the best UK jazz funk soul bands still around and are pioneers from the 80’s Acid Jazz scene and it’s great to see they are still touring and playing with as much energy as when they began. The Brand New Heavies have produced about 25 albums and don’t seem to be stopping any time soon as they know how to turn the funk up.
Before the headliners graced the stage, the crowd welcomed the support, Trope, who are a young UK jazz funk, neo soul fusion band, who have been together for about three years and consist of four members including the vocalist, Cherise Adams Burnett, who sang about eight tracks, including a jazz cover of Chaka Khan’s ‘I Feel for You’. After watching their set, the future of UK funk jazz soul seems safe with this contemporary collective. Trope have produced two EPs which can be found on here.
The Brand New Heavies stepped onto the stage ready to rock the crowd and Founding members – Andrew Levy (bassist) and Simon Bartholomew (electric guitar) lead the way. The crowd were treated to a classic playlist which included Diamond Light, Never Stop, Sometimes, Dream On Dreamer, Midnight at The Oasis, BNH, Brother Sister, Sweet Freak, Spend Some Time. Stay This Way, You Are the Universe and Dream Come True. The crowd sang along with most of the songs and Sulene fronted the band with grace and style.
Sulene is a soulful vocalist whose range complemented The Brand New Heavies classics. She was playful with the crowd and encouraged a fun-loving vibe. On the encore, Simon strolled through the crowd and showed his love as well as the band who gave an electric performance of ‘You Are the Universe’. An older member of the crowd jumped on stage with the help of the band to bask in the glory of funkiness.
