Adrian Stone, an established music producer from Bristol, now residing in London, has worked with the likes of Rodney P, Donaeo, Roni Size, Ky-mani, Marley and Beverley Knight to name a few, is now a leading Caribbean genealogist empowering the children of the Windrush to trace their history.
Adrian’s interest in his family’s past began as a labour of love when his beloved mother fell seriously ill ten years ago. He realised he knew little about his background, and like many Black Britons of Caribbean, origins felt keenly the lacuna left by the legacy of slavery. His interest grew into a learning journey and spiritual quest, during which he was able to discover more about his own identity, by meeting unknown family members through findings of documents, photographs, oral traditions and buildings which demonstrate his families experiences of enslavement. Adrian has discovered 6000 individual relatives covering a timeline of over 250 years, and the numbers keep growing. Amazingly, through the power of DNA, he’s found that he’s a distant cousin to R&B star Ella Mai.
This uniquely well-researched project documents Adrian’s journey from Bristol through to London, Jamaica, Scotland, America and ultimately to an African woman named Ebo Venus (Adrian’s 5 x great grandmother) who came to Kellits slave plantation in Clarendon Jamaica via slave ships in the 1790s from the Igbo tribe in Nigeria.
Adrian Stone joins Keith Lawrence this Wednesday at 11 pm on Mi-Soul Radio.
